Jaywalking

The complete Oxford English Dictionary traces the word "jaywalker" back to 1917 and labels it "originally US". In the early 1900s, the word "jay" was slang in the U.S. for a hick, rube, or simpleton – in other words, a person inexperienced in the ways of the bright lights in the big city. Wordsmiths believe the term "jaywalking" (or "J-walking") originated when cars were relatively new but gaining popularity in cities like Boston and New York. A jaywalker was a newcomer to the city, green to the ways of those modern traffic signals that told folks when they could safely cross the road. So persons who stupidly ignored traffic regulations were given (in Boston, it seems) this compact name. The verb "jaywalk" appeared in print a few years later than the noun. Both terms coincide with the appearance of automobiles on urban streets.

Today’s urban lawbreakers face greater risks, and even motorcycles reaching speeds of 50 mph in high-traffic pedestrian zones. One hundred years after the advent of automobiles, jaywalking is a common cause of vehicular accidents.

违反交通规则的人要面对更大的危险,就算是在人口高密度的区域,机动车也会开到50英里的时速。在汽车出现的一百年后,违反行人交通规则成了造成事故的主要原因之一。

The really-stupid variety of jaywalking involves an extreme form of impatience and the implicit belief that nothing anyone else is doing matters, the time and convenience of the jaywalker is of supreme importance. It’s a kind of antisocial selfishness. Most people jaywalk because they are impatient, not because it’s an emergency. Fact is, you might add no more than five or ten minutes to your walk, if you take the safe and legal route. I feel extremely sad when I see parents teaching their kids to jaywalk across streets!

人们不守交通规则的主要是因为缺乏耐心和心存侥幸,时间和便捷对于他们来说似乎尤为重要。这是一种缺乏公共观念的自私心理。大部分人违反交通规则仅仅是因为缺乏耐心,却没有什么紧急事件。然而事实上,遵守规则并不会耗去他们太多的时间。看到那些家长带着孩子横穿马路的场面,我真是感到莫大的悲哀。
