May has always been the best time for the wedding, with spring fever and a weeklong holiday. It was said that wedding banquet space in star-level hotels of Shanghai was completely reserved for the weekends, as many "good days" for a wedding in May triggered another wedding frenzy in the city. As a result, wedding banquet prices rose by 10 percent. In addition, the wedding ceremony masters were in short supply and some social celebrities were invited to take over the master job.
The wedding expenses in Shanghai are among the highest in the country. Young couples have withdrawn all their savings for the big day with a lifetime of memories to cherish. With young couples attaching much importance to a special and perfect wedding ceremony, demand for wedding services in Shanghai has moved into high gear. However, newlywed couples should be careful in selecting wedding service companies to avoid besmirching a "lifetime happy occasion."
Many people feel that a lavish wedding banquet, as a once-and-for-all splurge, is a must. All the necessary guests, including relatives, colleagues, friends, neighbors and former classmates are invited. I am surprised to see that a typical wedding package often includes one night accommodation for the newlyweds on the wedding night. Before the wedding ceremony, the studio wedding photos that cost several thousand yuan are indispensable. There are still many other expenditure involved in the wedding ceremony, including the sweets and cigarettes to be handed out at the wedding party, photographs/video recording and makeup for newlyweds, rent of the wedding suits, rent of the "happiness car" and wedding consultation. If account is taken of the new apartment, interior decoration, furniture, house appliances and the honeymoon, all of which have now been included among the city’s new marriage essentials, the cost of getting married is really tremendous.
In 1970s restaurants were rarely mentioned when talking about weddings, let alone five-star hotels. Wedding banquets were mostly held at the couple’s own home, and dishes were prepared by parents and close relatives. Our wedding banquet at New Asia about 20 years ago was virtually a luxury.
