Numbers play a role second only to food in Chinese custom and culture. It is believed that numbers can determine a person’s fate – for example in the naming of a child. As a matter of fact, the Chinese “number game” is a typical case of “civilization” Vs “tradition”, where tradition often rules.
According to our tradition, certain numbers are considered lucky, and others unlucky. The luckiest number in Chinese culture is eight, as the Chinese for eight sounds like the word for “prosper”. Nine is also a fortunate number, something to do with longevity. The former summer palace of a certain Chinese emperor had an arched bridge across the water that had 17 pilings supporting it since the center would be the 9th piling when counted from either side. Double six make another lucky sign. Four, conversely is a very unlucky number as in Chinese it sounds like the word for “death”. Thus Chinese adhering to the customs try to avoid the number four in, for example, car number plates, house addresses etc. But interestingly, when it pronounces in music the same as “enrichment” in Chinese, “four” becomes a lucky number. It is psychological factor that makes people believe in “lucky numbers”. Some people do have their own special “luck numbers” and take it very seriously.
Telephone numbers and car numbers consisting of lucky numbers are so popular (more of a status symbol because lucky numbers are so fought over) that sometimes they can be sold at high prices. People may make a fuss over a number selection that costs a fortune! In Saudi Arabia, prince Alwaleed Bin Talal, one of the richest people in the world, paid approximately $133,000 for 0555555555 for his cell-phone, and number 5 has no special significance in the Saudi Arabian culture. Moreover, a dude in Beijing coughed up $215,000 to buy the number 133-3333-3333 for a cell-phone!
As many Chinese people set their joyous events on days that carry lucky numbers, today (May 18) is surely a good day for businesses to open or young couples to marry, specifically capitalized on for the lucky implication of the day – “I shall be prosperous” (wo yao fa)!
